Songs4U is a self-contained musical quartet of singers performing a variety of songs backed by synthesiser (orchestral keyboard) accompaniment. Our group is based in Nottingham and can perform anywhere within a reasonable journey time from our base including during the working day.
Songs4U perform a variety of different types of music but we specialise in singing music from musicals and films. We also have a small repertoire of light classics, easy listening, light pop, standards, country music etc.
Songs4U can support private concerts, business events, celebrations and anniversaries, charity fund raising events etc. Mostly our programmes are made up of collections of songs from our extensive repertoire but occasionally we have delivered customised concerts to suit a particular audience need.
Our programme does not particularly include music for dancing or disco so, at a wedding, anniversary or birthday party for example, we would typically be providing interim contrasting entertainment as an extra supplement to a disco or live band.
We are available for day time performances and often perform at care homes or Independent Living establishments where we usually select a programme better suited to a more mature audience.
Each of us has also worked with many musical societies in and around the Nottingham area for many years now and enjoy talking to and connecting with our audiences in a personable way.
In 2020, Songs4U were supposed to be performing at Ruddington's VE celebration weekend, however, due to the COVID-19 lock down the weekend's events were all cancelled.
As the day drew near, and the talk was of front garden picnics and celebrations, we realised that we could probably perform a mini concert for our neighbours from our front garden since we all live in a small crescent. It would mean much improvisation since there had to be just the two of us (because of the social isolation).
So we hastily put together an impromptu programme. Many of the songs we had no music for and so had to busk the accompaniments - people would think that Les Dawson was playing the keyboard. And we worked the flute into one of the songs.
We borrowed a marquee (in case of rain); one of our neighbours gave us a CD of 40's music; and finally we pushed a note through everyone's letter box so they would know what we were planning.
The day arrived. We had a 100% turnout. The concert went well and we met (at a distance) with all of our lovely neighbours.
Angela made red, white and blue paper flowers for everyone to wear. Katherine brought out some cakes. And the sun blazed down and blessed the event.
Some donations were received and we matched them and donated them to the Royal British Legion.
This year, 2021, singing groups are once more able to perform. So, at the last minute before the year ended we managed to get in 2 concerts - both were for establishments that promote the independent living of older residents with on-site warden support; and we have another similar one lined up for January 2022.
